Hi Mika, How to write articles without (too much) stress

Dear Mika,

Welcome to the fifth installment of my newsletter.

Here's finally your "lesson" on how to write
an article without too much (if any) stress.

I don't know about you, but some people get a
bit of writer's block. Other people think you
have to be "inspired" in order to write.

Hogwash!

If you can talk, you can write. Imagine you're
telling something to a friend. Or maybe you're
explaining something to a friend. That's
exactly how you should write your articles.

Friendly, informal, and filled with interesting
information.

When I used to teach composition (also known as
essay writing for those of you not from the U.S.),
I would tell my students a few things:

a) Don't necessarily start at the beginning
(unless the beginning just wants to be written
first.

b) About what I just said, write it as if you were
explaining it to a friend: if someone still had
trouble, I set them up with a tape recorder
and a friend and had them actually tell their
friend a story and record it, then play it back
on the tape recorder and transcribe it.

They were astonished at their own eloquence!

c) There are a number of ways in which to
gather up material to write about. I'll tell
you about a few of them.

Let's start with freewriting.

For 10 or 15 minutes, write down everything
and anything that pops into your head, preferably
on the topic you want to write about.

But the main thing is to keep writing. Even
if all you're writing is "what the heck am
I supposed to write" -- just keep writing.

After the time is up, check if you wrote
something interesting. Circle those points,
and write some more.

Then start organizing it a bit into some sort
of a story or argument. BTW, this method
is called "freewriting."

Jeff Herring, my favorite article writing guru
http://www.articleguru.net says that if you
can write a shopping list, you can write
an article.

His method: make a list of 7 related things.
For example 7 ways to celebrate a birthday,
or 7 reasons for wearing warm clothes in winter,
or 7 ways not to catch a cold or 7 things to do
if you've already caught a cold.

I'm sure you get the idea.

For a nice little shortcut, Jeff has article
templates. He gives two of them away (at
http://www.articleguru.net) and he also sells
a whole ebook full of them (and those all have
actual sample articles so you can see exactly
how he goes from template to article).

Go ahead and give that freewriting a shot.
You may be surprised.

Next time, I'll show you another technique.

Meanwhile, just keep playing around with writing
articles. I want you to get warmed up with that
so you can hit the ground running once we get
rolling with the serious stuff.

So long for today. Look for the next installment
in a few days (it'll be faster in coming than
this one).

Have a fabulous week, and have fun with writing!

Till next time,

Be well,

Elisabeth
